Spray Lakes West Campground is located in Spray Valley Provincial Park Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada. The campsite is located along the scenic Spray Lakes Reservoir, 16 km from Canmore. It is a “First come, first served” camping, which is very popular.
Hidden in the shade of trees, camping sites have their own beaches and are situated in the way to provide a sense of intimacy for everyone. The beaches are made of rocky islets, partly covered with grass and moss. Thanks to the pristine clean water, it is easy to be under the illusion that the lake is extremely shallow. The stony bottom and ice-cold water do not deter us from swimming. The possibility of taking a bath in such natural circumstances is stronger. Accompanied by the Goat Range and the ridge called the Three Sisters, morning coffee tastes better, and we are in no hurry to leave this extraordinary place.
The only drawback of the campsite is the road. Although it is hardened with stones and marked with a speed limit, it gets mercilessly to dusty. Lucky people who have pitched their tents nearby can see gray dust. Sometimes this rising and falling dust gives an amazing atmosphere. It looks like sensations of rising smoke, from behind a green forest curtain or a fog falling on the lake. However, this is not so burdensome, and the scenery and peace reigns for any discomfort.
Spray Lake was once a collection of smaller lakes that formed along the Bow River. Along with the damming of the river, the lakes joined together. This picturesquely located water reservoir is not only a great viewpoint, but also a starting point for nearby trekking. Spray Lakes West Campground is located close to mountain trails and the road to Smith Dorrien / Spray Lakes Trail (Hwy. 742). Along the road there are plenty of parking lots where you can leave your car and go on a full-day trip. If you would like to stock up and shop, Canmore is 30 minutes by car from the campsite.
Spray Lakes West Campground is a first come, first served camping. Lack of booking requires your reflex and luck. If you find a free place, you must take a few steps to take this place.
The Summits of the Three Sisters have a fascinating history, it’s associated with their name. According to history, in 1883 Albert Rogers gave the name of Three Nuns. The reason was the storm, which removed the snow dome, revealing the northern part of all 3 peaks. Then in 1886 George Dawson changed the name of the peaks to Three Sisters, each of whom summit appointed Little, Medium and Big Sister. In addition to the pages of history, you can hear folk parables that refer to the legend of an old man or a cheater. He was to promise to marry each of the “three sisters” whenever he was in troubles. Regardless of which version is true, one thing is sure. The Three Sisters it is the most recognizable peaks and the pearls of Canmore.
